Big news! I have been selected to be a Humans of McGill University photographer. For those of you not familiar with the concept, Humans of McGill is a spin-off of Humans of New York, which is a photoblog of people interviewed in NYC. I interview and photograph students and staff at McGill. Follow the Humans of McGill University facebook page to keep up with their feed. Below is the transcript from my first interview with Emma Melis, a climate activist and environment student:
“The sign has a picture of a crying bee. That was one of the biggest things that catalyzed my passion for the environment in recent years. I was about 14 or 15 when I really started getting involved in changing policy to support pollinators and their habitats. This is the sign I made almost a year ago for the other climate march; I’ve just been reusing it. I was like, 'Why am I marching?' I could march for so many reasons. I could march for the intersections of environment, I could march for more accountability for corporations, or even a personal strike to reduce my plastic consumption. But ultimately, in that moment, I was really inspired to do it for ecology and for pollination and bees. If one thing falls apart, everything will begin to erode. […] It’s this huge ecological domino effect, and it also goes onto humans because of food security, as pollinators are responsible for creating so many food sources for people around the world.”
